As last years walk between Saria and Santiago de Campostella finished I said never again, but once again I joined Jan on a “little hike” in Spain to walk from Santiago to the coast. A total of 115 km (71 miles)
So on the 21st September Jan and I caught an early flight from Stansted to Santiago. We spent the rest of the day wandering around the city and visiting the cathederal. However this time we went for a tour of the roof, an experience that I found terrifying as we walked across the roof tiles at a forty five degree angle. Climbing the stairs to its dizzy height was a rude awakening to how fit we were and we both ducked out of going to the very top.
The next day we set off whilst still dark and without breakfast because it is best to get as much of a days walk in before the sun is too high and we preferred to start our walks near 8am.
Except for one day we had dry weather and at times very hot and unlike last year more walking in the open on roads and through agricultural landscapes.
This route is not so congested with “pilgrims” and we often had daily contact with the same people of various nationalities maintaining pleasantries with nods and smiles to communicate.
Being a minor route on the Camino (St James Way) meant there were few cafes along so few comfort breaks. The accommodations were very good and we were given two bedroom suites a few times. As before they were not always on the Camino so distance stated for the walk was far from correct.
The “Way” was peppered with severe ups and downs, sometimes I would say, at angles of forty five degrees and across scree and pine needles. But the scenery had much to offer the senses and was far superior to last year, and we enjoyed views and time beside the sea.
We returned to the UK on the 29th September after a very demanding but beautiful experience in good company.

The photos below were all taken by Jan who kindly gave permission for me to use them to illustrate this short description of the trip, but I was unable to download the location data and although I remember each photo and the fun surrounding the taking of it I can’t remember where many (none😱) were taken but hope they still give a flavour of the trip.

Don’t forget if you click on any of the photos you will be taken to a (manually operated) slideshow of the pictures.
