Buying a motorhome is not easy. There are dozens of manufacturers, hundreds of different models and thousands available for sale on the “pre-loved” or second hand market.
How to choose? How indeed?
We first made a list of all things we did NOT want, ie double beds with access on one side only – that took a huge number of models from lots of manufacturers off the list. A shower/toilet room where the shower and toilet occupied the same bit of floor space – that took another huge swathe off the list. A dedicated bedroom, this is fine if you are spending most/all your time in hotter, dryer climes where life is lived mainly outdoors but in wet and rainy UK?
We then made a list of things we DID want, three or four travel seats – we plan to travel just the two of us but may on rare occasions wish to travel with guests. A good lounging area – we have been in many motorhomes that have such small lounging areas that if four people sit they all touch knees.
The list of possibles got smaller and smaller untill we were left with just one :-
The Elddis Autoquest 185
Our search started as, I imagine many, vehicle searches start in this t’interweb age – on Autotrader, inputting all the details it came up with 52 possibles greater examination finally left us with around 24 examples we felt worth looking at. We looked at 5 that were local to us and thought they were all suitable, but feeling unable to make a decision all were quickly sold.
Having to visit our lock-up in Lancashire and needing to hire a car for a few days we decided to use the trip to visit and motorhome contenders of which there were seven on or close to our route north.
We visited three before deciding that all the vans we were looking at and the ones we previously looked at, were so similar to each other that we picked the one that had the “feel” when we walked in and agreed to buy that one.
As I write this we are waiting, with a little trepidation, for delivery day which is scheduled for eight days time – we cant wait.
