When we bought the motorhome we assumed a previous owner was, erm! a touch heavy, as one seat on each of the two sofas had a slight “bum depression”. The depression seemed slight and the foam was still supportive, sadly no one would describe either of us as lightweight so it was not long before the “bum depression” became so deep you could feel the framing under the cushions, we thought perhaps we would replace the foam without replacing the covers but as the foam deteriorated the fabric distorted more and more.

The upholstery, photographed at the dealer looked pretty good.

Eventually it reached a point where sitting was getting quite uncomfortable so we had to bite there bullet and get it replaced.

Each of the four lounge sofa seats is as worn and shapeless as this.

We had replaced the upholstery on a caravan some years ago at Regal Furnishing Ltd and was very pleased with the result. When we sold that caravan three years or so later after living in it full time and travelling Europe it still looked good and felt very comfortable, the only drawback was it had cost an arm and a leg. They still have pictures of our caravan with it’s new upholstery on their site one of which I have included below.

When our narrowboat needed upholstery replacement two winters ago we replaced it at a very good price, we asked for hard foam and chose a fabric with a special coating that “. . . shrugs off dirt and spills . . . ” less than a year later we replaced the soft and soggy foam and now it would be good to replace the grubby and stained covers but at least it was relatively cheap.

Having learned the hard way that “if you pay peanuts you get monkeys” we went back to Regal Furnishing for a quote to replace all the upholstery and recover the driver and passenger seats (when swivelled round they form part of the lounge furniture) this time the cost was two arms and two legs but we felt that at Regal Furnishing we would get top quality materials and top quality workmanship for the manufacture and install.

We were not wrong.

We arrived at Regal around 3.00pm the day before the install date, although we had already chosen fabric and leather we spent a considerable amount of time discussing finer details of the job.

The install day started at 7:30am when the driver/passenger seat man arrived to remove those seats and take them to his workshop to work his magic. Shortly after another chap arrived to measure the remainder of the seat and back cushions for the workshop that was making their replacements.

We had planned to walk along the tow-path of the Erewash Canal while all the work was being done but the weather, forecast to be reasonable, turned out to be absolutely “pants” so we spent the day sitting in the van watching YouTube videos and drinking tea.

Mid afternoon the driver and passenger seats were brought out of the workshop and refitted. They looked fabulous.

Super new seat coverings

Soon after another chap immersed from the upholstery workshop and removed the old seating then fitted the new.

Sofa cushions now looking fabulous.

That too looked superb.

All we had to do then was pay the bill – yikes!!
