The road to buying a motorhome is, for us at least a very long and arduous business so I have documented that on two other pages. You can read the first entitled “How Much!!!!!!😱” by clicking HERE and the second entitled “The Search” by clicking HERE.
We are now the proud owners of our second motorhome, I nearly said our first ever motorhome but just remembered back inthe late 1970’s early 1980’s buying a very old, (late 50’s) Austin FGK 40 Lorry with a “thrupenny bit cab” that had been converted to a motorhome. It was an absolute pig to drive – a non synchro gearbox, non power steering, non servo assisted braking. In common with virtually all caravans and motorhomes at the time it didn’t boast a shower or toilet. We didn’t have it for long!!!!!
The new motorhome is a far different animal and a joy to drive provided you remember that it is 7338mm (24’-1”) long, 2820mm (9’-3”) high and 2690mm (8’10”) wide. The length is less than any of our caravan/car combinations, the longest of which was12.5 metres (41’) and the height just 150mm (6”) more than the average caravan, it is the width that, while in reality also not much wider than our caravan tow car with tow mirrors fitted, probably less than 150mm (6”) just seems so much wider.
When we arranged insurance we were asked our annual mileage, I said I didn’t know and asked what the usual annual mileage was. I was horrified when I was told the average motorhome covered between 1000 and 3000 miles per year and after discussion agreed to say we would cover less than 10,000 miles but that it may, in reality need to be increased to a higher figure. After just one months ownership we have already covered 1703 miles (at around 26 mpg 😱😱😱) and if, as we hope, we get to Portugal this coming winter the journey there and back is some 2500 miles without the miles touring during our, hopefully, 90 day stay.
Of course getting the motorhome, taxing and insuring it is not the end of the story and like boats everything related to motorhomes costs so much more than you think. Even the bedding, because the beds are non-standard sizes, costs a fortune and when we get to bottled gas well! To read about our improvements and upgrades CLICK HERE
Detailing our adventures.
Unlike our other adventures we will not be living in the motorhome so the adventures will be somewhat spasmodic and will be documented as and when with possibly big gaps between.
