When we bought the motorhome we asked the vendor if they could fit a tow-bar for us. They said they could not but if we wanted to arrange for one to be fitted while we were waiting to collect it, they would be happy to facilitate the installer. I rang a fitter not far from the dealer asked for a price which was given and asked if he would be able to fit before our collection date. He said he could but would not want to fit the item without the customer being present and able to express his satisfaction or otherwise at completion.
That struck me as a good point so I switched my researches to fitters local to our mooring at Hinckley. The first place I rang turned out to be a manufacturer and supplier to the trade only but was kind enough to recommend several fitters in the area. I phoned or emailed every local fitter I could find, some of the calls went to voicemail which promised a call back at the earliest convenience and some were answered. One chap who answered said the could indeed do the job within a reasonable time frame but was out of the office and would ring back with a price first thing the next morning. He never did.
My call to another company was answered by a very efficient sounding young lady who took all the details said that to save me hanging on while she looked up prices and available fitting dates would ring me back within a half hour. She never did.
Of the other companies that asked me to leave a phone number not a single one rang back.
Of the companies I emailed with my requirements not a single one replied.
I was able to check on the internet that the original quote I had been given was competitive so I rang them a second time and asked if they were prepared to travel as far as Hinckley to do the job, over an hours run in a car, he said he was and a date and time agreed for an inspection visit. He arrived on the specified date and time and after checking he had quoted for the correct unit for our motorhome arranged a date and time for fitting. The fitting day arrived and Brian aka Derby Towbars, turned up spot on time, even ringing me a half hour before hand to say he was on time and would be arriving at 8.00 am.
The installation took longer than I thought it would as it seems the days if linking into the existing wiring is long gone, part of the kit was a wiring loom that had to be run from the rear of the vehicle to the front where after removing the battery (mounted under the floor in the cab) the harness had to be plugged into the existing harness – sounds easy, but it wasn’t.
Eventually the install was complete and Brian charged exactly what he had originally quoted for doing the job – THANK YOU – Derby Tow-bars
